Abstract:

Introduction: Studies on the balance of the musculoskeletal system treat the thoracic cage as a rigid volume resting on a flexible rod, namely the lumbar lordosis. However, studies on ventilation have shown that the thoracic cage exhibits a certain degree of deformability to fulfill its functions of ventilation and protection of the cardiopulmonary organs. The aim of this study is to model the functioning of the thoracic cage based on an analysis of the biomechanical parameters of locomotor and ventilatory movements. Methods: Twelve participants performed eight unidirectional movements associated with locomotion and ventilation (self-expansion, self-compression, forced inspiration and expiration, and trunk tilts of 45° and 70° to the right and left), which were recorded by five infrared cameras. Several angular biomechanical parameters were analyzed to characterize changes in thoracic spine deformations and intersegmental spinal movements. Results: At the costal and spinal levels, the thoracic cage can be modeled as two entities—an upper and a lower portion—characterized by opposing kinematic behaviors in the frontal plane (homo vs. contralateral). These results were consistent regardless of the imposed movement. However, during respiratory function, a specific behavior of the K10 rib was observed. Conclusion: The study should be continued, taking into account the subjects’ spinal morphotype (kyphosis/lordosis). (translated by Ostlib)
