An analysis of the effectiveness of a Midwest osteopathic medical school's pipeline programs: Graduation and GME match of URM and disadvantaged students

Abstract:

Pipeline programs have been widely used to enhance the channel of URM and disadvantaged students for many medical schools. These programs have proven to be successful in recruiting, matriculating, and graduating these students from medical schools and other terminal degree programs. The purpose of this archival quantitative study was to evaluate the efficacy of a Midwest United States osteopathic medical school’s pipeline program and its participant’s ability to persist at similar success rates as other enrolled medical students who received direct admissions. The first three theories were analyzed by using a chi-square analysis. The results of the analysis showed that non-pipeline program participants were slightly more likely to graduate in four years and moderately more likely pass the COMLEX board examinations on the first attempt. Both study groups were as likely to pursue a primary care residency GME, which supported the central mission of TU’s medical college. A logistic regression analysis was used to address the fourth question. The variables that were significant in determining the success of passing the COMLEX board examinations on the first attempt showed that the MCAT score, cumulative GPA, and non-science GPA were the significant determining variables. The second part of hypothesis four determined that the significant variables predicting the passing of the COMLEX2 board examination on the first attempt was MCAT score. The third part of hypothesis four showed that there were no predicting variables that significantly contributed to the passing of the COMLEX2 PE_PF board examination on the first attempt. The fourth part of question four indicated that three variables contributed significantly to passing the COMLEX3 board examination, which were cumulative GPA, non-science GPA, and science GPA. Overall TU’s pipeline programs have been successful in recruiting, matriculating and graduating more URM from its medical school.
