Abstract:

As a follow-up to the study of the inaugural class of Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine at Bradenton (LECOM-Bradenton) performed at the end of their second year of medical school, this new study addresses the student’s confidence and attitude towards the use of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) at the end of their fourth year. The first study was published in the December 2007 issue of JAAO.1 In this new study the LECOM-Bradenton inaugural class completed an anonymous survey just days before receiving their DO degrees. The survey examined their confidence level in performing OMM and their intention to use OMM in their clinical practice. Almost half (45%) of the students were undecided if they would or would not use OMM. The students’ experiences during their third and fourth year clinical rotations did not seem to impact the ambivalence which paralleled the findings of the prior study.
