Abstract:

Integrating the insights of numerous contemplative traditions, phenomenology, osteopathic medicine, and evolutionary cosmology, there is a contemplative pedagogy by which people can come to know themselves more fully, and recognize and express their humanity and their connection to all living beings; and hold that space for others. This work is informed by more than a decade of work as an educator, teaching rhetoric, composition, literature, and critical (creative) thinking at many levels, from elementary school through adult learners, seeking always to create the conditions that allow students of all ages to experience and come to know their innate wisdom, and to fall in love with the process of learning. This dissertation proposes that the experience of classroom learning will result in even greater innovation, democracy, and healing when re-envisioned through the practices of contemplative self-awareness. The belief is that latent human capacities will become realized as “students” learn to synchronize their innate “embryological” wisdom and health with the timeless health and direct line of wisdom in the universe: a synthesis of our timeless origin emerging and expressing itself through each of us. In particular this work is guided by a lineage of teachings that has been flowing uninterrupted through the Uwaiysi Tarighat for nearly 1400 years. The teachings continue in the life and work of Dr. Nahid Angha and Shah Nazar Seyyed Dr. Ali Kianfar, the daughter and spiritual son, respectively, of the 20th century Sufi Master Moulana Shah Maghsoud, who was also the student of his father, the Sufi Master Hazrat Mir Ghotbeddin Mohammad Angha. Sufism is the hidden mystical tradition of Islam. The school and teachings of Sufism became one of self-understanding, Marefat-o-nafs, and the teachers known as the companions of the heart. Ultimately, in this tradition to know oneself is to know one’s origin. At the center of this doctoral work is also a commitment to the craft of writing, which has the potential to awaken human beings to the unique rhythm and expression that moves through each of them, and to reveal the capacity for compassion and creation. Considering movements in composition theory, an approach to teaching and writing is offered that contributes novel insights applicable to education, business, and healthcare. The intention is to provide a pathway toward what I call The Beloved Learning Community.
