Abstract:

Osteopathic practices differ from each other in the services provided and the patients attracted. The profiles of 1200 consecutive patients (new and returning) were recorded on a computer database and analysed in comparison with other practice surveys, snapshot studies, and national Scottish population data. Both clinically and statistically significant differences were found between this data and previously published data for (a) male to female ratio, and (b) some age groupings. The mean height of patients with low back pain was greater than that of the Scottish population, which accords with other studies that have demonstrated a correlation between back pain and increased height.
