Abstract:

On February 26, 2014, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), and the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) announced that they reached an agreement to create a single accreditation system for all graduate medical education (GME), whereby the AOA and AACOM would be integrated into the governance and operations of the ACGME.1 In this health policy brief, I analyze the impact of this single accreditation system on the governance of GME and how it might shape the future physician workforce.
