Abstract:

Patient complaints of chronic, widespread musculoskeletal pain can be met with cynicism. The symptoms are all too real to the patient, but pinning down a diagnosis of fibromyalgia is difficult. Just as with chronic fatigue syndrome, women's health physicians are challenged to diagnose and treat women with flbromyalgia, a distinct, sometimes overlapping condition that affects upward of 4 million women, mostly between the ages of 30 and 50. Fibromyalgia can be missed or misdiagnosed because many of the symptoms, such as fatigue and generalized pain, disordered sleep and anxiety, mimic those of many other diseases. Treatment requires a comprehensive approach, with less emphasis on drug therapy and more reliance on palliative approaches, such as pain management, exercise, massage therapy, physical therapy, and relaxation techniques. There is growing interest in and research focused on gaining a better understanding of the underlying biochemical abnormalities responsible for fibromyalgia. Researchers recently found an abnormality in the central nervous system that produces the systemic pain. Until more is known, practitioners must become adept at identifying female patients who suffer from this disorder and more aware of the tools available to improve the quality of their patients' lives. To that end, the Journal of Women's health and Gender-Based Medicine interviewed two nationally recognized experts in flbromyalgia to obtain insights into effective management of this chronic condition.
