Abstract:

Research design: Within the framework of this thesis a qualitative study, based on literature research, was conducted. Outline/Definition of the problem: In literature osteopathy is often connected with the concept or the term of wholeness and is thus called a holistic method. Therefore the starting point of this thesis shall be the following question: In how far have these terms been subject to modification in a period of time from A.T. Still’s concept Man in Triune to the first decade of the 21st century? Research questions: 1. Which subjective interpretations of the terms wholeness/holism made by osteopaths are there today and which definitions can be found in literature? 2. Is the term wholeness/holism in osteopathy a subject to modification in the course of time? Relevance for the patient: Osteopathy regards itself as a holistic method, thus the meaning as well as the interpretation of this term directly affects the treatment of patients. Relevance for osteopathy: Dealing with the concept of wholeness has effects on the osteopath’s view of and approach towards his profession as well as on the treatment of his patients. Methodology: The literature part of this thesis comprises a historic outline of the medicine of the 19th century, definitions of wholeness and the explanation of therefore relevant aspects, such as body, mind and spirit as well as an overview of certain holistic methods. The interview part consists of five interviews with osteopaths that were conducted according to Broom’s (2005) in-depth style and subsequently interpreted and evaluated, also following Broom (2005). Results: Explanatory models concerning the concept of wholeness are subject to change. However, the terms that are used for definitions and explanations remained similar or even identical over the course of time. Hence certain terms that were already used by Still (2009), such as body, mind and spirit, are still applied by three of the five interviewees. Further concepts that are often found in the context of wholeness nowadays are: physique and psyche. Critical reflection/perspectives/ summary: All holistic methods that are introduced within the framework of this thesis are based on a philosophical background. It is not merely the techniques that are applied that make up the holistic orientation of a certain method. Thus it is useful and reasonable to deal with the osteopathic philosophy in some detail. Of course the subjective opinion concerning wholeness of the five osteopaths that were interviewed is not really significant. Future works could deal with the topic of specializations within osteopathy, the holon concept of Ken Wilber or an amplification of the curriculum towards the integration of more philosophical or historical topics that are relevant for osteopathy.

Studiendesign: Es handelt sich um eine qualitative Studie aufbauend auf einer Literaturrecherche. Outline/Problem Definition: Die Osteopathie wird in der Literatur immer wieder mit dem Begriff Ganzheit in Verbindung gebracht und als ganzheitliche Methode bezeichnet. Inwieweit es seit A.T. Still’s Konzept Man in Triune bis ins 21. Jahrhundert einen tatsächlichen Wandel des Begriffes Ganzheit gegeben hat, stellt den Ausgangspunkt dieser Arbeit dar. Forschungsfragen: 1. Welche subjektiven Interpretationen für Ganzheit/Ganzheitlichkeit gibt es heute von Osteopathen und welche Definitionen beziehungsweise Interpretationen findet man in der Literatur? 2. Ist der Begriff der Ganzheit/Ganzheitlichkeit in der Osteopathie einem zeitlichen Wandel unterlegen? Relevanz für den Patienten: Die Osteopathie definiert sich als ganzheitliche Methode. Die Bedeutung und Interpretation des Begriffes hat daher direkte Auswirkung auf die Behandlung der Patienten. Relevanz für die Osteopathie: Die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema Ganzheit hat Auswirkungen auf die Sichtweise des Osteopathen auf seinen Beruf und die Behandlung seiner Patienten. Methodologie: Die historische Beleuchtung der Medizin des 19. Jahrhunderts, Definition von Ganzheit und Erläuterungen einiger dafür zentralen Elemente wie Körper, Geist, Seele und Ganzheit und ganzheitliche Methoden sind Thema im Literaturteil. Im Interviewteil werden im in-depth Stil nach Broom (2005) fünf Osteopathen interviewt und die Gespräche anschließend nach Broom (2005) ausgewertet. Results: Die Erklärungsmodelle bezüglich der Ganzheit sind dem Wandel der Zeit unterlegen. Die Begriffe, die zur Definition und Erläuterung herangezogen werden, sind aber teilweise deckungsgleich. So finden sich zum Beispiel Körper, Geist und Seele sowohl schon bei Still (2009) als auch bei drei der interviewten Osteopathen. Weitere Begriffe die ebenso Verwendung im Zusammenhang mit der Ganzheit finden sind unter anderem Physis, Psyche und Leib. Kritische Reflexion/Perspektiven/Zusammenfassung: Die vorgestellten ganzheitlichen Methoden haben einen philosophischen Hintergrund. Techniken alleine machen eine Methode nicht ganzheitlich. Die Auseinandersetzung mit der osteopathischen Philosophie ist deshalb durchaus sinnvoll. Die Meinungen von fünf Osteopathen zum Thema Ganzheit ist natürlich nicht aussagekräftig. Weitere Arbeiten könnten sich mit dem Thema Spezialisierung in der Osteopathie, Ken Wilber’s Holonkonzept oder mit der Erweiterung des Unterrichtsplanes mit philosophischen oder historischen Themen aus der Osteopathie auseinandersetzen.
