Abstract:

Study Design Controlled, randomised, single blinded, mono-centric intervention study. Outline/Problem Definition Pharmacotherapy of restless legs syndrome (RLS) is often complicated with strong side effects and high costs. In osteopathic literature a treatment with Strain Counterstrain Technique (SCS) promises alleviation. In this study the effectiveness of SCS was examined. Research Question & Objective Measurement for the target figures were the scores of 1. Severity of symptoms (symptoms); 2. Impact of the symptoms on daily life activity (impact) and 3. General severity of RLS (global). Hypothesis Due to the osteopathic treatment with a Strain Counterstrain technique it is not possible to influence the symptoms of the Restless Legs Syndrome. Relevance for the Patients Maybe by using osteopathic techniques a cost-efficient option can be found, which is free of side effects. Relevance for Osteopathy For the osteopathic medicine the research concerning the Restless Legs Syndrome has not been important so far. Regarding the osteopathic treatment of the Restless Legs Syndrome identical information can be found in two books. Jones (2005), the founder of the Strain Counterstrain technique and Meyers (2006) each describe in their books a Strain Counterstrain technique (SCS) for the application to apply in the case of the Restless Legs Syndrome. Solely with this technique it is said to be possible to alleviate the ailments of this disease pattern. Here, this approach is to be reviewed. Methodology Altogether the study included 50 patients with RLS. They were devided into two groups. Into an intervention group (verum = 26 patients) and a control group (placebo = 24 patients). There were three treatments at intervals of one week. Before a treatment and as follow-up four weeks after the last intervention, patients had to answer the questionnaire of the International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group. Results 38 patients have completed the study. At the beginning both groups were similar, there was a significant improvement of symptoms by treatment with SCS. For all three indexes a decrease of the values in the intervention group is recognizable. Compared to this the values of the control group virtually stay constant. The sample means of the intervention group for the severity of the symptoms improved by 15.1 to 9.1; for the exposure of symptoms on the daily life of 4.7 to 2.6 and for the global score of 21,5 to 12.9. Critical Reflection/Perspectives/Conclusions The result should be viewed critically, and further studies are recommended.
