Abstract:

Craniosacral therapy (“CST“) is a non-traditional, hands-on form of treatment that originated from the field of osteopathic medicine. Today, however, CST has been incorporated in the treatment regime among healthcare practitioners in a variety of settings. This study surveyed various healthcare practitioners on the utilization of this treatment and its awareness among occupational therapists. In regard to the utilization of craniosacral therapy, several findings proved significant in this study. Among the practitioners who use CST it was found that CST was used more often than any other form of traditional or non-traditional treatment available to the practitioner. It was also found that the use of CST lead to a greater improvement in health than any other available form of treatment. The results also showed that the greater the age of the practitioner, the more positive they felt about the patient's recovery with CST treatment. In regard to CST's awareness among occupational therapists, it was found that exactly half of the respondents queried were familiar with and half unfamiliar with CST. Of those familiar with CST, most heard about it through a fellow practitioner. Chronological age and age graduated from an occupational therapy program played a role in familiarity with CST. It was found that the older the practitioner, both chronologically and upon graduation, the less likely they are to have been exposed to CST.
