Abstract:

The dysgnathia patient's function and painlessness raise several questions concerning optimization of therapies, which are often time-consuming. In the presented clinically controlled and evaluating pilot study therefore, and as a novelty, the effectiveness of osteopathic treatment of dysgnathia patients after an operation was examined. A group of 10 voluntary patients was treated by an osteopath three times after surgery at an interval of 4 weeks. The success of the treatment was controlled during a fourth consultation. Target parameters were the substantially valid operationalized features mouth opening, speaking/speech, ingestion, deglutition and pain. The goal was to reduce postoperative complaints in these areas and to prevent recurrences. The appropriate data have been collected by means of repeated measurements, surveys, observations by others and self-observations. Analysis and evaluation were done by description and by means of a power analysis. The empiric results provide encouraging evidences that the target parameters could be increased by osteopathic treatment in an effective, time-saving and steady way. It is recommended to integrate osteopathic treatment into post-operative care of dysgnathia patients.
