Abstract:

Objective: Parent requests for osteopathic treatment of children and newborns have been increasing for years. This development resulted in cooperation between clinics and osteopaths to implement paediatric osteopathy in hospitals. This paper intends to analyse the status quo, define the role of paediatric osteopathy in hospitals, and give suggestions as to how to improve cooperation. Methods: This paper is a qualitative interview study. The authors conducted and analysed guided interviews using Grounded Theory methodology including theoretical sampling and maximal triangulation. The analysis is structured in professional groups and hospitals. The results will help define the role of paediatric osteopathy in hospitals, and give a prospect for the future. Outcome: The results show that paediatric osteopathy can add to the multidisciplinarity in hospitals. Paediatric osteopathy is expected to provide a complimentary approach in children care, and introduce the osteopath as a confidant. The implementation of osteopathic care in hospitals can be facilitated by means of pilot experiments, and might help ensuring an osteopathic primary care in hospitals. Conclusion: It is recommended to incorporate osteopathy not only as a multidisciplinary but also a interdisciplinary element in German hospitals to provide an osteopathic primary care for children born in Germany. However, for the time being it will not be possible to realise this step due to legal and economic reasons.
