Abstract:

The clinical picture of the whiplash injury, which is oſt en the result of a collision, is a post-traumatic disease with a broad spectrum of symptoms. Clinically, there is usually no radiographic correlation of the symptoms, but patients suff er from nonspecifi c symptoms such as neck pain, muscle tension, headache, dizziness, tinnitus, jaw pain and cognitive impairment. These versatile symptoms are the result of various injuries of diff erent areas of the neck. Undergoing a whiplash injury the neck muscles are overstretched and the facet joints of the cervical spine are harmed, which is also the main source of pain in this trauma. A compression of the intervertebral foramina and an irritation of the spinal nerves in the cervical vertebrae as well as a hyperextension of the vertebral artery can cause circulatory disorders in the brain. From a fi nancial point of view, this illness has a huge importance due to the payment of compensation or loss of work. If pre-existing conditions already exist on the cervical spine or if the patient is in an unfavorable psycho-social situation, a chronification of the clinical picture could arise. The corresponding symptoms adversely aff ect the daily life of the patients, although the prognosis of the mild and moderate whiplash injury under good conditions is relatively positive. Th e literature focusses on the defi nition and the biomechanical conception of the injury mechanism of the structures in the neck, such as bones, joints, nerves, vessels and muscles, in order to prevent chronifi cation aſt er the acute phase of the symptomatology and to give the patient a better quality of life. This can be done through various osteopathic treatment options which will positively influence the course and the prognosis.
