Abstract:

Study Design:For this study a quantitative research approach was adopted.Outline/Problem Definition:While working with my patients, I have repeatedly observed that my therapeutic interventions are more efficient when I succeed in establishing a good relation with the patient and in perceiving the patient in a non-judgmental manner by taking into account and responding to his or her current life situation. I asked myself what kind of ability or competence was necessary for me as an osteopath to be able to identify phenomena such as fear, sadness or anger in a therapeutic setting and to deal with them adequately in order to establish a good connection with the patient. At that time I encountered the model of emotional competence. Novy (2007), whose study focuses on the patient-therapist relationship in osteopathy, indicates that the osteopaths interviewed by her feel helpless in the event of interaction issues and conflicts and therefore demands that a conscious shaping of the therapist-patient relationship and aspects such as empathy be considered more strongly in osteopathic training. This demand is supported by the General Osteopathic Council (2000) which, in its ?osteopathic standards?, requires a professional therapeutic relationship with the patient, thus underscoring its significance. This is how I developed the idea to investigate the status quo of emotional competence among WSO graduates in Austria in order to analyze whether there is a necessity to include aspects of emotional competence in osteopathic training.Research Question & Objective:What is the status quo of emotional competence among Vienna School of Osteopathy (WSO) gaduates in Austria?Hypothesis:Assumptions: 1) On average WSO graduates demonstrate a high level of emotional competence. 2) Certain aspects of emotional competence are developed below average. 3) Several dimensions show gender-specific differenceMethodology:The sample consisted of 57 WSO graduates (44 females, 13 males). For the survey, Rindermann´s Emotional Competence Questionnaire (EKF), consisting of a main scale and a subscale, was used. This questionnaire meets the quality criteria of objectivity, reliability and validity. The following aspects of emotional competence were measured throug self-assesment: recognizing and understanding one´s own emotions, recognizing other people´s emotions,regulating and controlling one´s own emotions, emotional expressivity, regulation of other people´s emotions and attitudes towards emotions. In order to guarantee anonymity, the questionnaire was sent to 264 osteopaths by the WSO via email. The response rate was 21.6%. Results: The results show above-average emotional competence in 59.6% of the participants. 2) WSO graduates do not demonstrate a lower performance than the respective standard population in any of the aspects. 3) Significant gender-specific differences could be identified regarding the categories [_/P_] [_H2_]Critical Reflection/Perspectives/Conclusions[_/H2_] [_P_]The risk of intentional distotion could be kept to a minimum as there were no positive consequences for the paticipants. For further validation of the results, the observations obtained through self-assessment could have been compared to external assessment by others. Furthermore, a higher response rate would have provided the results with a higher significance. The low percentage of male participants (22.8%)reduces the significance of the gender-specific differences in the results.

Studien Design: Bei dieser Studie handelt es sich um eine quantitative Sozialforschung. Methode: Die Stichprobe umfasst 57 Abgänger der WSO (44Frauen,13Männer). Es wurde der Emotionale-Kompetenz-Fragebogen (EKF) nach Rindermann, bestehend aus einer Haupt- und einer Nebenskala, zur Anwendung gebracht, derdie Gütekriterien Objektivität, Reliabilität und Validität erfüllt. Mittels Selbsteinschätzung wurden folgende Bereiche der emotionalen Kompetenz erhoben: Erkennen und Verstehen eigener Emotionen, Erkennen von Emotionen bei anderen, Regulation und Kontrolle eigener Emotionen, emotionale Expressivität, Regulation der Gefühle anderer und Einstellungen zu Gefühlen. Um die Anonymität zu gewährleisten, wurde der Fragebogen per e-mail  an 264 Osteopathen von der WSO ausgesandt. Die Rücklaufquote betrug 21,6%. Vorannahmen: 1.) WSO-Abgänger weisen im Durchschnitt eine hohe emotionale Kompetenz auf. 2.) Teilaspekte der emotionalen Kompetenz sind unterdurchschnittlich ausgeprägt. 3.) In einzelnen Dimensionen gibt es geschlechtsspezifische Unterschiede.Ergebnis:1.) Die Ergebnisse haben gezeigt, dass 59,6% der Probanten eine überdurchschnittlich hohe emotionale Kompetenz aufweisen. 2.) Es gibt keinen Teilaspekt, bei dem die WSO-Abgänger schlechter als die jeweilige Normbevölkerung abschneiden. 3.). Signifikante geschlechtsspezifische Unterschiede konnten in den Dimensionen: “Erkennen der Emotionen bei anderen“(t=-2,553df=55p=0,13)“Emotionale Expressivität“(t=-3,111df=55 p=0,003)und “Einstellung zu Gefühlen“(t=-3,118 df=55 p=0,003)  festgestellt werden. Diskussion: Verfälschungsabsicht konnte dadurch, dass es für die Probanten keine positiven Konsequenzen gab, gering gehalten werden. Selbsteinschätzung hätte mit Fremdeinschätzung zur Absicherung verglichen werden können. Bei einer höheren Rücklaufquote hätten die Ergebnisse deutlichere Aussagekraft. Geringer Männeranteil (22,8%) relativiert geschlechtsspezifische Unterschiede.
