Abstract:

With the increase in asthma morbidity there arises a need for a safe, accessible, and effective form of treatment to improve asthma management. This study investigates how OMT Rib Raising and Muscle Energy at T8-11 can stimulate the adrenal glands through a somatovisceral response resulting in a therapeutic bronchodilation via release of catecholamines and cortisol. These OMT techniques are reported to induce mechanical events enhancing pulmonary function. Building upon our previously reported pilot study in Normal individuals, we are now examining a cohort of subjects with asthma. Subjects included in Phase II of this study have been physician-diagnosed with mild to moderate asthma and no other major or interfering health problems. Males and females beteen the ages of 18-55 were recruited through the DMU clinic and Des Moines area. Subjects were classified as OMT-Naive or OMT-Aware based upon previous OMT experience. Both groups were then randomized in a blinded fashion, designed to ensure equal gender distribution, to either a sham or real OMT intervention treatment group. Parameters evaluated included height, weight, age and race. Measurements of BP, pulse, O2 saturation, respiratory rate, GSR and PFT were recorded pre and post intervention. Twenty-four hours post intervention GSR and PFT were again assessed. Plasma catecholamine and cortisol were determined pre and post intervention for the OMT-Naive group only. A log to assess symptom severity, medication use and impact on activity was maintained for three days pre and one day post intervention. A blinded survey of the subjects' perception of the treatment (OMT or sham) was given following the intervention to assess the efficacy of the treatment blinding., Adverse effects were determined by a questionnaire at the end of the participation period.
