Abstract:

Obesity in America is becoming a major community health issue. Obesity is a contributing factor for diseases that require lifelong treatment such as diabetes high cholesterol and coronary heart disease. Osteopathic physicians have been involved in patient care and treatment for this disorder. The attitudes and beliefs about obesity can be affected by the practice a physician words in and the teaching and training obtained in medical school. This study examined six areas of interest that have an impact on the treatment of patients who are obese as well as taking into account the training level, sex and weight ofthe osteopathic medical students. These results were measured using a questionnaire with sixty-five items asking various questions about obesity. This study concluded that Osteopathic medical students do have adequate knowledge about obesity which is based heavily on their past experiences. However, there is evidence proving that these students also believe in some of the stereotypical myths about obesity. One ofthe recommendations from this study is for the institution to provide more education on causes, management, and counseling of obese patients.
