Abstract:

In the Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) clinic, low back pain is a common complaint that has a plethora of root causes. The sacrum is a common culprit for low back pain as it bears the weight of the axial skeleton and distributes the load throughout the pelvis. Treatment of the second posterior sacral segment (S2) tenderpoint with counterstrain can be used to resolve somatic dysfunctions of the sacrum. Prior techniques have addressed the sacral tenderpoints using one vector of motion. In this article, the complexity of sacral motion is discussed along with how to effectively target the sacrum using both arms of the sacroiliac joint to create a precise position of ease and utilizing a combination of Facilitated Positional Release (FPR) and Myofascial Release (MFR) to treat. Additionally, this article will elaborate on indications, contraindications, and a problem-solving list if the dysfunction does not resolve.
