Abstract:

Osteopathy is a therapeutic modality little explored by the medical community, but it has proved to be a strong non-invasive intervention option, helping to alleviate and correct musculoskeletal disorders and injuries, among others. It is an approach with its own methodology, developed in 1874, in the United States, by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still. The qualified therapist performs an assessment, diagnosis and treatment based on human anatomy and physiology, using techniques to find the source of the problem. To evaluate the effect of osteopathic intervention techniques on temporomandibular disorders on joint pain and mobility. This systematic review was carried out in accordance with the guidelines of the Preferred Items of Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis Reports (PRISMA), based on clinical trials that used osteopathy as a therapeutic intervention for temporomandibular disorders, produced in English, Portuguese or Spanish and collected in the Medline, Embase, Cinahl, Cochrane, PEDro and LILACS databases evaluated according to the PEDro and Cochrane scales. Two independent reviewers verified the quality of the studies using a punctuated checklist, containing general items according to the guidelines of the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) and Cochrane Handbook. From the search strategy, 3382 studies were identified using the previously determined keywords. After applying the eligibility criteria, three studies published until June 2020 were considered eligible for analysis. Gathering evidence to better guide clinical practice was the main objective of the systematic review, however, due to the small number of studies and low quality, it was not possible to establish a consensus on the effectiveness of osteopathic interventions in the treatment of temporomandibular disorders. references cited here can support future research and further deepen the theme.
