Abstract:

To introduce the trial-like process of Clinical Osteopathy the presented work will now be broken down into several sections. The first section deals with clinical thinking and work called clinical reasoning a term commonly used in the Anglo-American regions. Aside from the explanation, clinical procedures and their possible connection and links to Osteopathy will be covered and the necessity for lateral thinking, in terms of the synergy of the Osteopathic philosophy and clinical reasoning will be described and emphasised. This description places, despite a theoretical procedure, a lot of value on the implementation of the practical doing and thinking of the therapist. This does not happen with the help of case examples, but clear and systemic, and as the case may be, systematic review of the theory should serve as a practical feasibility in the diagnosis and therapy. The second section tries to shed light on the significance of clinical work and mindset in Osteopathy. This is achieved through a questionnaire that was given out to participants of the Master of Science programme at Krems’ University and the students of the WSO (Vienna School of Osteopathy). Based on the hypothesis that the significance of clinical work decreases with more experience, yet the outcome was that clinical doing and thinking in each individual group (they were divided into groups depending on experience and profession e.g. doctors and physiotherapists) was attributed a higher value. In addition, the evaluation of the questionnaire pointed to insecurities in clinical handling.
