Abstract:

Study Design: A qualitative study with six guideline-oriented, problem-centered interviews. Outline/Problem Definition The purpose of this study was to find out whether empathy can be assumed to be part of the perception process in osteopathy. Therefore it was first necessary to outline the term empathy and distinguish it from similar terms like compassion, emotional contagion, sympathy and projection. Research Question & Objective is empathy a part of the perception process in osteopathy? Hypothesis empathy is a part of the perception process in osteopathy and osteopaths gain important information through empathy Relevance for the Patients patients should profit when their osteopaths are more aware and clear about their perception Relevance for Osteopathy if empathy is part of the perception process this phenomenon should be discussed and more importance to this theme should be given in osteopathic education. Through awareness and through improving empathic abilities, perception abilities could be raised Methodology a qualitative study with six guideline-oriented, problem-centered interviews Results The main result of this study is that empathy is a possibility to gain further relevant information about the patient and thus empathy can be seen as a part of the perception process in osteopathy Critical Reflection/Perspectives/Conclusions This study does not deal with the aspect whether empathic communication can be seen as part of empathy but focusses on the perception aspect of empathy. Further research on this realm would be desirable. Following theory discussed in this study empathy can be seen as part of the perception process in osteopathy and influences choice and adaption of the osteopathic treatment and the interaction between osteopath and patient.
