Abstract:

Objective: My objective was to test the hypothesis whether it is possible to reduce the symptom-giving sacroiliac joint relaxation in pregnancy with osteopathic treatment and whether three therapy sessions are adequate for this purpose. Design: This is an empirical study with non-randomised sampling (haphazard sample) applying within subject design. Subjects and methods: 14 pregnant women with symptom-giving sacroiliac joint relaxation were examined from the 12th week of pregnancy till the 34th week of pregnancy. Before the therapy they were observed during one reference week with regard to pain intensity and quality of life. Observation took place also after the therapy. Interventions: Three therapy sessions took place in intervals of one to two weeks. Observation was based on questionnaires answered before the therapy sessions and after each treatment. The pregnant women were tested by means of manual examinations before the series of therapy sessions and after the last observation period. Results: Very significant improvement of the primary dependent variables, i.e. pain intensity and quality of life, was observed after the series of therapy sessions. Various manual examinations also indicated that significant improvement of the symptom-giving SIJ relaxation in pregnancy was achieved. Conclusion: Three osteopathic therapy sessions are necessary for the treatment of symptom-giving SIJ relaxation in pregnancy in order to reach significant improvement.
