Abstract:

Background: Osteopathic consultations in Quebec are becoming increasingly popular in this Canadian province. However, no publicly available information details the profile of osteopathic manual techniques used by osteopaths practicing in Quebec. Methods: Participants were recruited to complete a questionnaire based on a U.S. study and validated by the research team. The questionnaire was sent via email (SurveyMonkey), through various osteopathic associations, and via Facebook. The survey consisted of 82 questions, ranging from demographic information and educational background to the frequency and preference for using various groups of techniques. Results: The survey was completed by 229 practitioners out of a population of approximately 2,000 osteopaths, representing a response rate of 11.5%. A descriptive analysis of the profile of Quebec osteopaths regarding their educational background and other sociodemographic data was presented in a previous article. Joint, Muscle Energy, myofascial, cranial, and visceral techniques were reported as being used frequently to very frequently by more than half of the respondents. High-velocity, low-amplitude adjustments appear to be used frequently to very frequently by 39% of the respondents. Conclusion: The practice of Quebec osteopaths is eclectic and involves the use of various osteopathic techniques, among which visceral and cranial techniques are reported as being used most frequently by the majority of respondents. Abstract original language:
