Abstract:

There are two commonly used approaches to motion testing in Osteopathic diagnosis - local motion input and passive regional motion input. This article defines the diagnostic approaches and looks at one of the possible implications when results of the two differ. Viscero-somatic input into the nervous system is an intriguing source of these differences. It can be confirmed by the use of linkage testing or testing for accord/lack-of-accord previously studied and defined by William L. Johnston, D.O., F.A.A.O. In the complex patient who has not responded to practitioner's diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, evaluation of the motion inputs for differences at troublesome recurrent dysfunctional segments may suggest viscero-somatic input that also needs to be treated. Checking for linkage and lack-of-accord can also be fruitful at such segments. Treatment of these findings has unique characteristics related to lower extremity motion input.
