Abstract:

This study examines the extent to which the guiding principles and curricula of German osteopathic institutions and schools integrate and convey the element of holism as formulated in the philosophical ideas (“triune man”) of Andrew Taylor Still. This qualitative, interview-based study critically examines the concept of “original” osteopathy, which is based on the philosophical ideas of Andrew Taylor Still. Osteopathy is viewed as a concept that is dynamic in terms of history and the history of ideas; while its roots lie in Still’s thinking, it remains open to interpretation and further development. Still’s view of osteopathy as a holistic science and philosophy is historically contextualized in this study against the backdrop of holistic models of thought and reflected upon from an open, non-absolute perspective. Interviews with the directors of osteopathic schools and colleges in Germany were conducted using an interview guide and were examined, evaluated, and compared using qualitative content analysis, supported by software (MAXQDA), for qualitative and mixed-methods data analysis. Die Studie untersucht, inwieweit die Leitprinzipien und Lehrpläne deutscher osteopathischer Institutionen und Schulen das Element des Holismus integrieren und vermitteln, wie es in den philosophischen Ideen („triune man“) von Andrew Taylor Still formuliert ist. Die qualitative interviewbasierte Arbeit setzt sich kritisch mit dem Konzept der „ursprünglichen“ Osteopathie auseinander, das auf den philosophischen Vorstellungen Andrew Taylor Stills basiert. Die Osteopathie wird als ein historisch und ideengeschichtlich dynamisches Konzept betrachtet, dessen Wurzeln zwar im Denken Stills liegen, das jedoch offen für Interpretation und Weiterentwicklung bleibt. Stills Sicht auf die Osteopathie als eine ganzheitliche Wissenschaft und Philosophie wird in der Arbeit vor dem Hintergrund holistischer Denkmodelle historisch eingeordnet und im Sinne einer offenen, nichtabsoluten Perspektive reflektiert. Interviews mit Schulleiter*innen der osteopathischen Schulen und Hochschulen Deutschlands wurden mithilfe eines Interviewleitfadens durchgeführt und mittels qualitativer Inhaltsanalyse, softwaregestützt (MAXQDA) zur qualitativen und Mixed-Methods-Datenanalyse untersucht, ausgewertet und miteinander verglichen.
