Abstract:

Introduction Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is growing exponentially worldwide, with 537 million adults currently suffering from this disease, with reduced protective sensitivity being one of its main complications. Objective The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) in combination with standard care on protective sensitivity in patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods The study is a prospective randomized clinical trial with 42 participants distributed into two groups – experimental group (G1) and control group (G2) – each with 21 participants. An esthesiometer tool (0.05gf to 300.0gf) was used to monitor plantar sensitivity during the five sessions of osteopathic manipulative treatment. Results No significant difference was found between groups; however, both showed a trend toward improvement due to the evolution in sensitivity to heavier monofilaments for lower levels after the intervention. Conclusion The study found no significant effects of OMT combined with standard care. Results suggest that outcomes may be more influenced by individual self-care, lifestyle, and contextual factors than by the intervention itself.
