Abstract:

The Austrian Association of Osteopathy (ÖGO) performed a field study collecting data about efficiency and safety of osteopathic treatments, in order to gain a data base for negotiations with the ministery of health and for reasons of quality control. 814 patients were asked to fill questionnaires in eight anonymous and randomised performances, collecting the change of their primary symptoms by the treatment, other changes in physical and emotional matters, reactions appearing after the treatments and the satisfaction with osteopathic treatment. Statistical evaluations, mainly with descriptive methods, of three subpopulations of the dataset were performed, partly after subsequent classification. More than 90% successful therapies and as much contented patients were the results of this study, 50% to 60% also felt - mostly positive - changes in physical and emotional matters which were not related with the primary symptoms, indicating a high quality of a holistic treatment.
