Abstract:

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of osteopathic care as a complement to medical treatment in infants with congenital lacrimal duct obstruction. Methods: Fourteen infants with congenital lacrimal duct obstruction received the same medical treatment: eye cleansing with saline solution and lacrimal sac massage. Seven infants were randomly assigned to the group receiving three osteopathic treatment sessions. Each session included tests and techniques targeting the head, spine, ribs, sacrum, and iliac bones, as well as intervention in the areas surrounding the nasolacrimal duct and a technique known as “nasolacrimal duct drainage.” The outcome measures were the severity of tearing, stuck eyelids, and crusting, as assessed by the parents using scales ranging from 0 to 5. Results: The severity of tearing, stuck eyelids, and crusting decreased significantly after osteopathic treatment in infants in the treatment group (p<0.05, p<0.02, and p<0.03, respectively). The changes were not significant for infants in the control group. On Day 21, the difference between the groups was significant for the “Crusts” variable (p = 0.04) and not significant for the “Sticky Eyelids” and “Watery Eyes” variables. Conclusion: Our results suggest that osteopathic treatment is effective for infants with congenital lacrimal duct obstruction. Further research is needed in the form of a randomized controlled trial with a large sample size and long-term follow-up. (translated by Ostlib)
