Abstract:

Osteopathy is mostly found in the field of manual medicine. Due to its denomination, it is often associated with the musculoskeletal system and especially the skeleton. Based on this stigmatization of osteopathy, it is interesting to find out which role the other organ systems or organs play in osteopathy. This leads to the question: How important are fluids and especially blood in osteopathic medicine? Based on a literature research, a text interpretation of the original literature of osteopathy, specifically the four books by Andrew Taylor Still, the discoverer of osteopathy, is carried being out. It is shown that from an originally osteopathic perspective, blood is considered to be an essential fluid of the human organism, which is responsible, among other things, for the building of bones, nerves, muscles, glands or fascia. The blood receives its maturation from the lungs and is sent into the body through the heart, the supply machine of the body. From the results it can be concluded that the blood, including its leading vessels and the organs upstream and downstream of the blood, must always be integrated _into a meaningful osteopathic treatment context, because after all the osteopath uses „the knife of blood“ for therapy.
