Abstract:

Question: “In some areas of Germany the majority of parents visit an osteopath with their newborn usually aſt er getting a recommendation by their midwife” says Wolfram Hartmann (Maier 2016). As a result the registered pediatricians have to deal with the topic osteopathy for children quite oſt en, since they have to issue medical certifi cates for the parents so they can claim their expenses with their health insurance company. Although, not all pediatricians will hand out these certifi cates. The goal of this paper is to fi nd what registered pediatricians think about pediatric osteopathy and how they handle the topic of medical certifi cates. Method: The present paper was conducted as a qualitative interview study using guided interviews. The recorded interviews have been transcribed, the material was collected and the data incorporated in categories. T e breakdown of the data is organized by categories. The result is leading to ideas of how the cooperation between pediatricians and pediatric osteopathy might look like in the future. Results: Analyses of the data showed that all the participating pediatricians are more and more confronted with the topic osteopathy. They have to look into that subject. Furthermore there need to be more scientifi c studies with a higher number of cases to proof the eff ectivity of osteopathy. Conclusion: There should be a better cooperation between pediatricians and pediatric osteopaths. The osteopaths should communicate with nearby medical offi ces to introduce their work and to invite the doctors to see and learn about the job a pediatric osteopaths does. That will probably raise the acceptance by the doctors.
