Abstract:

The American Osteopathic Association (AOA) Council on Continuing Medical Education (CCME) has the authority to monitor the osteopathic continuing medical education (CME) program of the AOA and the process of accrediting CME sponsors. The CCME devotes a substantial amount of its time and energy to reviewing and strengthening the quality of the osteopathic CME process. This report provides an update on recent quality enhancements proposed by the CCME, including: proposal of a position paper titled, “Teaching Osteopathic Philosophy, Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment and Manual Therapy,” which was adopted in July 2002 by the AOA Board of Trustees as the official policy of the AOA House of Delegates; work with the Committee on Professional Publications to prepare materials to educate members and AOA-accredited CME sponsors about the benefits and limitations of evidence-based CME; the awarding of Category 1-A credit for programs on bioterrorism; and update on recent CME activities. This article provides a recent update on trends in osteopathic CME and in CME requirements for state licensure.
