Abstract:

Introduction: Legislation for traditional and complementary medicine in Portugal has been rapidly changing the dynamics of these therapies when it comes to accessing these professions and meeting the legal standards and requirements to practice them. However, an argument can be made for the need to continually develop practice standards. Some of these standards such as patient-centred communication, the concept of a professional identity and continued professional development are key to ensuring professionalism and patient safety. Also, the goal for osteopaths should be to seek forms of increasing these standards in a way that will bring credibility to the practice among both consumers and other health professionals alike. Methods: This article briefly analyses the current status of legislation and regulation for osteopathy in Portugal while presenting evidence that a formal regulating body would ensure the development of practice standards, enforce continued professional development, confer a professional identity and open a discussion on what are some of the values that help define what osteopathy is. Results: The arguments and opinions presented in this article build a valid case as to why it would greatly benefit practitioners and patients alike to form a formal regulating body. The evidence presented is unequivocal, both professionals and patients alike would benefit from greater regulation leading to stronger practice standards and professional values. Conclusions: For osteopathy to solidify its place in Portugal as a health profession, much needs to be done to secure greater regulation. The evidence in favor of such an organization must weigh into the minds of osteopaths in Portugal at this crucial moment of establishing ourselves as a responsible form of therapy, as arguments in favor of improving continually over time will never stop stacking up.
