Abstract:

Despite its international growth over the past decade, research in osteopathy has struggled to gain a foothold in France. Many clinical trials—particularly those conducted as part of graduation theses—suffer from significant methodological biases, which discredit the otherwise serious work of students and researchers. In order to bring clinical trials in osteopathy up to the standard of trials in the medical field, it is essential to understand the biases and limitations commonly encountered in clinical research protocols. However, publications on methodology can be difficult to understand for those whose training does not include this discipline. Therefore, we believe it is necessary to introduce methodological biases using an educational approach that is understandable to students and osteopaths. This article describes the narrative review protocol and the protocol used to develop a guide for osteopathic researchers and students. The presentation of this article follows the PRISMA guidelines. The resulting guide focuses on the major limitations and biases applicable to each stage of a randomized controlled trial protocol: literature search, participant selection, allocation and randomization, medical history and interview, osteopathic tests and treatment, data analysis, and publication of results. For each limitation and source of bias, the guide provides a description, examples relevant to osteopathy, and concrete solutions to mitigate or even avoid them. The guide is available for free download. (translated by Ostlib)
