To aid in understanding this approach, somatic dysfunction and its conceptual classifications are explained as are the principles and philosophy behind osteopathic rehabilitation treatment. The major manual medicine concepts of barriers, activating forces, spectrum of techniques, and concurrent diagnosis and treatment are presented. The authors include specific approaches to different types of rehabilitation patients, including patients with stroke, amputation, postoperative orthopedic requirements, and spinal cord injury. Clinical concerns are also outlined, including topics such as documentation, coding, and consultations. Research into osteopathic manipulative medicine is also considered.
